The WICShopper Online platform removes the traditional requirement to visit brick-and-mortar stores, where participants often face challenges ranging from limited mobility to the social stigma sometimes felt during in-person checkout. By digitizing the benefit redemption process, the system allows users to identify eligible products, build orders, and schedule deliveries without needing to enter a PIN in front of a cashier.
Heidi Staats, Director of WIC Innovation and Partnerships at Umoja Health, noted that the initiative serves a dual purpose: providing modern convenience for families while creating new market opportunities for small, independent, and tribal-owned retailers. With 1.4 million families already using the WICShopper app for shopping assistance, the transition to full online ordering is intended to ensure that geographic location no longer dictates a participant's ability to access nutritional support.
