The project involved a collaboration between Grainger employees, ToolBank USA, and students from YouthBuild Lake County and YouthBuild Waukegan. Each five-gallon bucket contains specialized equipment designed to assist households with immediate cleanup and structural repairs following hurricanes, wildfires, and floods. These kits are managed by ToolBank USA, which has already distributed similar supplies to 97 communities across the U.S., Hawaii, and Puerto Rico over the past four years.

Grainger Mobilizes Volunteers for North American Disaster Relief
More than 500 volunteers gathered at Grainger’s Lake Forest headquarters on September 23 to assemble 4,000 disaster relief kits. The initiative, now in its fifth year, equips families with essential hand tools and cleaning supplies, creating a stockpile for future emergency response efforts across North America.
Beyond immediate disaster relief, the event functions as a vocational outreach program. YouthBuild participants worked alongside industry professionals, gaining exposure to careers in the skilled trades and supply chain logistics. Melanie Tinto, Grainger’s Chief Human Resources Officer, noted that the build serves a dual purpose: preparing regions for environmental crises while providing young people with pathways to professional development. The kits are slated for deployment in several high-risk areas, including Houston, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and San Juan.
