FBI Convenes Secretive Crypto Forum Amid $11 Billion Fraud Surge

The FBI recently gathered federal investigators, foreign law enforcement, and private-sector security specialists in San Antonio for its annual Virtual Asset Technical Exchange. Amid a backdrop of record-breaking financial losses and escalating state-sponsored cyber threats, the invitation-only forum served as a tactical hub for combating the rising tide of digital crime.

FBI Convenes Secretive Crypto Forum Amid $11 Billion Fraud Surge

The two-day event, held in early September, drew hundreds of attendees, including senior bureau officials and blockchain forensics experts. While the FBI maintained its customary silence regarding the proceedings, participants confirmed the agenda focused on the practical realities of tracing illicit funds. Discussions spanned a broad spectrum of criminal activity, from human trafficking and terrorist financing to the sophisticated social engineering tactics now targeting major crypto protocols.

North Korean Cyber Threats

State-linked operations, particularly those originating from North Korea, dominated much of the technical discourse. Analysts highlighted the April breach of the Solana-based Drift Protocol, which resulted in $285 million in losses, as a case study in modern infrastructure compromise. TRM Labs and other forensic firms have linked this exploit to North Korean actors, who utilized social engineering to manipulate administrative permissions before draining assets. With sanctioned entities reportedly receiving over $104 billion in cryptocurrency in 2025, the bureau is increasingly coordinating with international partners to address how adversarial states leverage digital assets for sanctions evasion and procurement.

The gathering signals a shift toward more specialized enforcement as the FBI’s Virtual Assets Unit, established in 2022, grapples with a landscape where reported crypto-related losses topped $11 billion in 2025. By blending intelligence from private firms like TRM Labs and Predicate with official law enforcement efforts, the bureau aims to professionalize its response to a sector where compromised credentials and stolen keys have become the primary vectors for large-scale theft.
