IBM bridges Digital Asset Haven to Swift blockchain ledger

IBM has integrated its Digital Asset Haven platform with Swift’s blockchain-based shared ledger, allowing regulated financial institutions to manage tokenized deposits using familiar ISO 20022 messaging. The move enables banks to initiate transactions across the Swift network without abandoning their existing payment workflows or internal infrastructure.

The integration, announced September 24, leverages an ISO 20022 Messaging Adapter to connect IBM’s platform directly to Swift’s Hyperledger Besu-based architecture. By utilizing standard financial messaging, banks can execute tokenized deposit movements 24/7, while final settlement remains anchored to established banking rails. This approach ensures that institutions retain control over their keys, funding, and compliance processes while tapping into the speed of a shared blockchain ledger.

Alongside this connectivity, IBM has launched an on-premises beta of Digital Asset Haven for IBM Z and LinuxONE systems. This deployment option allows banks to keep digital asset operations—including stablecoin management and cold storage—entirely within their own data centers. The hardware-backed environment utilizes Crypto Express security modules to manage keys, aiming to satisfy stringent regulatory requirements for auditability and asset protection without relying on public cloud infrastructure.

Seventeen global banks, including Citi, HSBC, and UBS, are currently piloting the Swift ledger to streamline cross-border payments. With J.P. Morgan reporting that 93% of financial institutions are actively modernizing their payment systems, IBM’s strategy targets the friction between traditional banking and emerging digital asset classes. The company plans to showcase these capabilities during the upcoming Sibos 2026 conference.
