Backpack CEO Targets 10,000 Tokenized Stocks on Solana

“Not 10 stocks, not 100 stocks. We want to bring the entire stock market to Solana,” said Backpack CEO Armani Ferrante. The executive is pushing to expand the platform's tokenized equity offerings from its current baseline of roughly 200 symbols to 10,000, creating a bridge between traditional brokerage accounts and decentralized finance.

The proposed expansion relies on a single API designed to facilitate the movement of real shares between conventional brokerage infrastructure and the Solana blockchain. By allowing users to convert brokerage holdings into tokenized securities, Backpack aims to enable these assets to circulate within DeFi applications. While the company has not provided a specific rollout date, the plan represents a significant shift toward integrating established financial markets with on-chain ecosystems.

Backpack’s current model relies on security entitlements governed by New York’s Uniform Commercial Code. When assets are tokenized, they can be held in compatible digital wallets or moved between users. However, ownership rights vary compared to traditional holdings; for instance, dividend payments for tokenized assets are often reinvested into additional tokens rather than distributed as cash. The SEC has previously cautioned that tokenized securities may not mirror the exact rights of their underlying assets, noting that legal entitlements depend entirely on the specific structure of the product.

Regulatory oversight remains a central hurdle. On September 17, the SEC introduced a five-year framework granting conditional relief for trading tokenized National Market System stocks, provided the venue verifies that tokens grant holders rights identical to traditional shares. While Backpack continues to grow its service—most recently by adding Kyle Samani to the board of its U.S. division—it remains unclear whether the platform’s current offerings will align with these new federal conditions as it scales toward its 10,000-symbol goal.
