This registration enables Coinbase to bypass third-party clearing providers for specific product lines, leveraging the stablecoin’s 24/7 liquidity to facilitate continuous settlement. While the firm now controls its own exchange, brokerage, and clearing operations, the new authority is limited to fully collateralized contracts. Products requiring traditional margins or the company’s anticipated single-stock perpetual futures will continue to rely on external clearing partners.

Coinbase secures CFTC approval for USDC-native clearinghouse
The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission has granted Coinbase Clearing LLC registration as a Derivatives Clearing Organization, allowing the exchange to settle fully collateralized futures, options, and swaps using USDC. The approval marks the final piece of the company’s internal, end-to-end regulated derivatives infrastructure.

Coinbase submitted its application for the clearinghouse in November 2025, culminating in the September 28 approval order. By bringing clearing in-house, the exchange aims to streamline the lifecycle of its regulated derivatives, though it has yet to announce a specific timeline for the launch of its first internal contract. The move positions Coinbase alongside entities like Gemini Olympus and Polymarket Clearing in the niche of USDC-native, fully collateralized clearing services.
