Halloween Spending Hits Record High as Celebrations Expand

The traditional single night of trick-or-treating has evolved into a month-long marathon, with 49% of shoppers beginning their purchases in September or earlier. As total Halloween spending climbs toward an estimated $13.5 billion, families are increasingly balancing multiple events, from school parties to competitive neighborhood trunk-or-treats, throughout the entire season.

Halloween Spending Hits Record High as Celebrations Expand

The shift in holiday habits has transformed how consumers approach the end of October. Rather than a one-time shopping trip, households now manage a cycle of events that requires consistent supplies, including specialized décor for yard displays and bulk materials for classroom and community gatherings. With 74% of Americans now participating in the holiday, the demand for affordable, high-volume party goods has reshaped the retail landscape.

Retailers like the Omaha-based Oriental Trading Company are positioning themselves to capture this trend by consolidating holiday needs into single, bulk-priced orders. By offering thousands of items—ranging from themed trunk-or-treat kits starting at $9.99 to craft supplies priced as low as 57 cents—the company aims to mitigate the rising costs of extended seasonal celebrations. Brian Moen, Chief Marketing Officer, notes that the goal is to provide a streamlined experience that allows families to sustain their enthusiasm across multiple weekends without exceeding their budgets.
