Morgan Stanley Opens Lab to Probe Tokenization and DeFi

Morgan Stanley has launched a dedicated Digital Asset Lab to experiment with tokenized deposits, digital currencies, and decentralized finance applications. Operating within the bank’s existing innovation network, the facility allows employees to stress-test blockchain protocols and automated investment strategies without touching core financial systems.

Morgan Stanley Opens Lab to Probe Tokenization and DeFi

Led by Megan Brewer, the lab targets the intersection of traditional finance and distributed ledger technology. Researchers are specifically investigating how software-driven DeFi vaults could potentially execute investment strategies around the clock, while also evaluating the mechanics of tokenized bank deposits versus traditional stablecoin structures. The initiative functions as a sandbox, distinct from the bank's current client-facing infrastructure.

This research complements a broader suite of existing digital asset products. Morgan Stanley already provides crypto exposure through its ETRADE platform, which supports Bitcoin, Ether, and Solana trading, and maintains the MSNXX stablecoin reserve fund. While ETRADE services are managed through third-party infrastructure provided by Zerohash, the new lab focuses on internal R&D for future institutional applications. The bank expects to transition its crypto custody services to its own Digital Trust entity by 2026, though the lab’s experimental work remains independent of these regulatory and operational timelines.
