Joe DiMaggio Hospital Secures $230,000 for Pediatric Mental Health

The program targets children who arrive at the emergency department but do not meet the strict medical criteria for hospital admission or involuntary psychiatric holds under the Baker Act. By facilitating an immediate handoff, the hospital system ensures families receive behavioral health support within 24 hours. Once enrolled, patients receive four to six months of dedicated care from a therapist and case manager, with services delivered directly in homes or schools to maintain stability in the child's daily environment.

Tim Curtin, vice president of community services at Memorial Healthcare System, noted that the funding allows for a more responsive level of care during volatile periods for families. The initiative is designed to remove traditional barriers to treatment, ultimately reducing the reliance on emergency interventions. As the program enters this expansion phase, it seeks to serve 267 individuals, emphasizing a shift toward accessible, non-restrictive support systems for South Florida youth.
