Ecnoglutide Shows Promise for Adolescent Obesity in Clinical Trial

The Phase 1b trial, which enrolled 48 participants aged 12–17, addressed a critical gap in the Chinese medical landscape where no anti-obesity medications are currently approved for adolescents. Over a 20-week period, patients receiving ecnoglutide experienced BMI reductions between 11.2% and 12.6%, while the placebo group saw no significant change. These results were accompanied by improvements in secondary metabolic markers, including blood pressure, triglycerides, and HbA1c levels.

Safety remains the primary concern for pediatric pharmacotherapy, and researchers reported no drug-related serious adverse events during the study. Reported side effects, such as nausea and vomiting, were largely mild and transient. The pharmacokinetic data mirrored findings from adult studies, supporting the potential for using established adult dosing regimens in younger populations. Following these findings, Sciwind Biosciences has initiated a Phase 3 clinical trial to further evaluate long-term efficacy and the impact on adolescent growth and development.
