Hackers Hijack Microsoft X Account to Promote Clippy Crypto Token

Microsoft regained control of its official X account Thursday after unauthorized users seized the profile to promote a fraudulent cryptocurrency named CLIPPY. The attackers replaced the company's branding with the legacy office assistant and pushed unverified claims that the token was backed by Microsoft’s own corporate stock.

The security breach lasted roughly 30 minutes, during which the intruders used Microsoft’s reach to repost promotional content and follow accounts associated with the token. While the perpetrators claimed liquidity in the pools exceeded $200,000, Microsoft issued a statement—later deleted—categorically denying any corporate connection to the asset. The company clarified that ownership of the token provides no equity or rights within Microsoft Corporation and confirmed it is pursuing legal action to address the misuse of its intellectual property.

This incident mirrors a growing trend of high-profile social media compromises targeting major entities to facilitate pump-and-dump schemes. Earlier this year, attackers hijacked the X account of Microsoft India to impersonate trader Keith Gill, while similar breaches have recently impacted the profiles of Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev and accounts linked to SpaceX. The SEC has repeatedly cautioned investors against relying on social media endorsements, noting that fraudsters frequently exploit the perceived legitimacy of verified corporate accounts to manipulate markets and drain digital wallets.
