Trump Threatens Brazil With 50% Tariffs Over Bolsonaro Trial

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened Brazil with a 50% tariff on all goods exported to the United States, citing the ongoing criminal trial of former Brazilian leader Jair Bolsonaro. Trump, who labeled the proceedings a “witch hunt,” issued the ultimatum in a letter sent to current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The threat, set to take effect August 1, 2025, marks a sharp escalation in diplomatic tensions between the two nations. Trump justified the move by claiming Brazil has engaged in “insidious attacks” on free speech, specifically targeting the Brazilian Supreme Court’s regulatory actions against U.S.-based social media platforms. Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is overseeing the Bolsonaro coup-attempt case, previously clashed with these platforms over the spread of disinformation, leading to a temporary suspension of the social media site X.

Despite Trump’s assertions that the tariffs are necessary to correct “unsustainable trade deficits,” economic data suggests otherwise. According to figures from the Office of the United States Trade Representative, the U.S. maintained a $7.4 billion goods trade surplus with Brazil in 2024. Observers have characterized the tariff threat as a political maneuver rather than an economic correction, noting that it deviates from the standard diplomatic correspondence Trump has utilized with other nations this week.

Beyond Brazil, Trump has signaled a broader protectionist agenda against the BRICS economic bloc. During a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, he announced plans to impose a 10% tariff on any nation belonging to the group, claiming the alliance was designed to undermine the U.S. dollar. Critics, including academics and trade analysts, have condemned the move as an attempt to leverage American economic influence to shield political allies from domestic legal accountability.
