Bernie Sanders Challenges Sam Altman Over AI's 'Acceptable' Risks

Following OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s suggestion that society must tolerate negative outcomes to reap the rewards of artificial intelligence, Senator Bernie Sanders has demanded a specific accounting of those costs. The lawmaker questioned whether the public is expected to accept mass unemployment, surveillance, or even global extinction as collateral damage.

Bernie Sanders Challenges Sam Altman Over AI's 'Acceptable' Risks

Altman recently told Politico that the world should accept some bad things happening for the sake of technological progress and human agency, though he declined to define the scale of such harms. Sanders (I-Vt.) responded by calling for an immediate halt to advanced AI development, citing risks that range from a mental health crisis for children to the potential for total systemic collapse. The senator, joined by Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas), is pushing for a permanent ban on artificial superintelligence that could exceed human control or threaten democratic institutions.

The push for oversight follows a White House meeting where Altman and other industry leaders signed a commitment to self-police their models following recent security breaches. Critics argue that relying on profit-seeking firms to regulate their own inventions is insufficient. United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk echoed these concerns this week, warning that the window for meaningful regulation is closing rapidly. According to Türk, unchecked AI threatens to erode privacy and public discourse, potentially allowing a digital dystopia to take root before governments can effectively intervene.
