The new route represents the longest segment within the Aura project, which now spans 9,000 kilometers of a planned 14,000-kilometer national footprint. By utilizing dual fibre pathways—one for express traffic and another for regional access—the network offers organizations a scalable alternative to traditional infrastructure. Major technology firms, including Microsoft and Google, have already secured capacity on the system to support their growing local requirements.

Telstra Activates Perth-Sydney Fiber Route to Bolster Digital Transit
Telstra has officially opened the Perth-Sydney stretch of its Aura Network, establishing a high-capacity fiber link designed to bridge Western Australia’s industrial hubs with eastern markets and international subsea cables. This expansion addresses rising data demands driven by the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence and cloud computing across the continent.

This infrastructure investment arrives as Western Australia positions itself as a strategic digital and defense hub. According to research from Oxford Economics commissioned by Telstra, the state’s digital economy is projected to expand from 16.8 billion dollars in fiscal year 2025 to nearly 89.1 billion dollars by 2040, provided digital adoption accelerates. Steven Worrall, CEO of Telstra Digital Infrastructure, noted that as industries like mining become increasingly automated, the connectivity linking remote operations to global cloud resources becomes as critical as the physical hardware deployed on site. The Perth-Sydney link is a central component of Telstra's broader 1.8 billion dollar capital commitment to modernizing Australia’s digital backbone.
