The transition marks a strategic pivot for AWS, which already holds membership in 25 Linux Foundation projects, including the Cloud Native Computing Foundation and the PyTorch Foundation. By securing the highest tier of membership, the company aims to formalize its role in project governance and long-term sustainability. This move follows the 2024 establishment of the OpenSearch Software Foundation, a spin-off of the AWS-led search and analytics suite.

AWS Joins Linux Foundation as Platinum Member
Amazon Web Services has attained Platinum status within the Linux Foundation, cementing a decade-long collaboration to sustain the open source technologies that underpin modern global infrastructure. This elevation grants AWS a seat on the board of directors, reinforcing its influence over key projects ranging from cloud-native computing to agentic AI.

"When we build infrastructure that solves a problem beyond AWS, we look for a neutral home to help sustain it," said Stormy Peters, Head of Open Source at Amazon Web Services. The partnership focuses on maintaining healthy ecosystems for critical technologies like Kubernetes and the emerging Model Context Protocol. Through this commitment, AWS will continue to provide engineering resources and funding to ensure these collaborative projects remain viable at a global scale.
