Jonathan Spalletta Convicted in $55 Million Uranium Finance Heist

A Manhattan federal jury found cybersecurity consultant Jonathan Spalletta guilty of computer fraud and money laundering for orchestrating two 2021 attacks against Uranium Finance. The conviction, which followed a six-day trial, could result in a 20-year prison sentence for the 36-year-old Maryland resident when he is sentenced this February.

Prosecutors successfully argued that Spalletta exploited vulnerabilities in the platform's smart contracts to drain approximately $55 million from liquidity pools. During the trial, the government presented evidence of a digital paper trail and a confession in which the defendant dismissed the stolen assets as fake internet money. The first breach in early April 2021 netted roughly $1.4 million, followed by a second, far larger attack later that month that forced the permanent shutdown of the project.

Following the thefts, Spalletta funneled the cryptocurrency through mixing services like Tornado Cash to obscure the origins of the funds. Investigators eventually traced the illicit proceeds to a collection of high-value assets seized from his Rockville residence. Among the items recovered were a Black Lotus Magic: The Gathering card, rare Pokémon booster packs, an ancient Roman coin, and a piece of fabric from the Wright brothers' airplane. While defense attorneys maintained that the defendant merely utilized publicly available smart contract functions, the jury rejected these claims, delivering a guilty verdict on all counts. Federal authorities have since seized approximately $31 million in cryptocurrency and collectibles, establishing a dedicated contact point for victims awaiting potential restitution.
