NYC Mayor Mamdani Faces Backlash Over Stance on October 7 and Gaza

Amidst the three-year anniversary of the October 7 Hamas-led attacks, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is navigating intense political fire. During a Thursday press conference, he doubled down on his call to mourn both the 1,100 Israelis killed in 2023 and the 74,000 Palestinians lost in the subsequent conflict.

Mamdani’s position, articulated in a recent statement calling the Hamas-led attacks war crimes and the Israeli government's military response a genocide, has drawn condemnation from across the political spectrum. Protesters at an Israelis for Peace vigil recently labeled the mayor a traitor, while prominent Democratic figures, including Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, accused him of desecrating the memory of victims.

Despite the hostility, Mamdani remains unmoved. Standing alongside congressional candidate Brad Lander, who defended the mayor’s commitment to human rights, Mamdani insisted that humanity requires acknowledging all lives lost rather than choosing sides. He further criticized the federal government for its role in funding the weaponry utilized by the Israeli military in Gaza, maintaining that human rights protections must extend to all people.
