The Bank of Russia’s recent decision grants Sberbank authorization to organize digital currency circulation, marking a significant expansion of the lender's financial ecosystem. By securing both exchange and digital depository registrations, the bank intends to facilitate the trading of Bitcoin, Ether, and USDT without requiring users to migrate to third-party platforms. Plans include offering crypto-backed loans, building on a successful pilot conducted with mining firm Intelion Data in 2025.
Sberbank enters a growing field of nine registered exchange operators, a list that includes VTB and T-Invest Lab. While these firms must adhere to immediate transaction and recordkeeping mandates, the regulator has provided a grace period until September 1, 2027, to achieve full compliance with all technical requirements. The launch arrives alongside a broader regulatory framework that enforces investor testing and caps annual purchases for non-qualified individuals at 300,000 rubles, while simultaneously permitting cryptocurrency for cross-border settlements.
