Engagement Rings Face High Daily Wear Risks and Low Insurance Rates

Sixty-two percent of couples rank their engagement ring among their three most expensive possessions, yet fewer than half bother to insure the item at the time of purchase. This widening protection gap leaves high-value jewelry vulnerable, even as modern couples increasingly treat rings as permanent, everyday accessories.

Engagement Rings Face High Daily Wear Risks and Low Insurance Rates

The 2026 Engagement Ring Study from Jewelers Mutual Group highlights a disconnect between the emotional investment in jewelry and the practical steps taken to secure it. While 90% of wearers keep their rings on during high-risk activities like hiking, sleeping, and cooking, the majority remain underinsured. This negligence begins before the proposal, with 41% of purchasers holding the ring for over a month, often storing it in unsecured locations like closets or drawers.

Financial exposure remains a significant issue for those who skip specialized coverage. Among uninsured wearers who experienced accidental damage, over half never sought repairs. Mike Alexander, president of Jewelers Mutual, emphasizes that standard homeowners or renters insurance often carries limits that fail to match the modern market value of engagement jewelry. He advises couples to secure specialized policies that account for loss and theft, rather than relying on general property coverage.

Beyond protection, the study reveals shifting consumer priorities in ring selection. Design and uniqueness now outrank price, stone size, or brand recognition for 52% of respondents. Solitaire settings have seen a surge in popularity, jumping from 22% in 2024 to 37% today. Despite these changing aesthetics, the core challenge remains the same: ensuring that a significant financial and sentimental asset is shielded from the hazards of daily life.
