CISOs Must Trade AI Bans for Governed Autonomy, Armor CEO Argues

Banning artificial intelligence is a losing battle that encourages shadow IT, according to Armor CEO Chris Drake. Speaking at GovWare 2026 in Singapore, Drake argued that security leaders must stop trying to block AI innovation and instead establish strict, auditable governance frameworks that allow employees to use AI tools safely.

CISOs Must Trade AI Bans for Governed Autonomy, Armor CEO Argues

Modern security leaders are trapped between pressure to drive AI-led competitive growth and the mandate to protect sensitive corporate data. Unlike the transition to cloud computing, where CISOs could vet providers and gatekeep data flows, AI agents now infiltrate organizations through browsers and productivity tools without triggering traditional security checkpoints. Drake warned that endpoint detection tools often lack visibility into local virtual machines, leaving businesses vulnerable to processes that operate invisibly to the host.

To bridge this gap, organizations must transition from reactive perimeter defense to a model of sovereign control. This requires a shift toward rigorous data classification—identifying exactly what information exists, who owns it, and how it is processed. Once data is categorized, companies can define routing policies that dictate which external models are permissible and when private execution is required. By establishing these rules, firms can automate business tasks without requiring manual approval for every action.

Drake emphasized that CISOs need a written mandate to authorize or restrict AI, supported by a clear escalation path to risk committees. Without approved, governed paths for AI, employees will continue to circumvent security protocols to maintain productivity. By providing a secure platform where agents operate in isolated, auditable environments, organizations can mitigate fourth-party risks while maintaining the regulatory compliance necessary for high-stakes industries.
