Allegheny Health Network has appointed renowned surgical oncologist Dr. Nipun B. Merchant to lead its Department of Surgery, establishing him as the system’s inaugural surgeon-in-chief. Starting in February 2027, Merchant will oversee the strategic integration of surgical services across the network’s 16 hospitals and ambulatory centers to elevate national research and clinical standards.

Joining from the University of Miami Health System, Merchant brings a high-profile background in both clinical operations and translational science. At Miami, he held roles including Chief Surgical Officer and founding Director of the Sylvester Pancreatic Cancer Research Institute. His transition to Pittsburgh marks a deliberate effort by AHN to unify its surgical enterprise, moving away from fragmented care toward a cohesive model that bridges academic discovery with patient outcomes.

As chair, Merchant is tasked with recruiting faculty and scaling the network’s research capabilities. His expertise in gastrointestinal and pancreatic cancers, backed by long-standing National Institutes of Health funding and over 250 peer-reviewed publications, aligns with AHN’s goal of expanding highly specialized care. He succeeds Dr. David Bartlett, who led the department on an interim basis during the national search. Dr. Bethany Casagranda, AHN’s chief medical officer, noted that Merchant’s appointment is a milestone in the organization's push to solidify its reputation as a regional leader in complex surgical treatment.
