STRK token holders are currently weighing whether to authorize deeper exploration into becoming a sovereign network. While the vote is nonbinding and does not initiate an immediate migration, it serves as a litmus test for community appetite regarding autonomy. StarkWare, the primary developer, argues that while its existing STARK proofs are inherently quantum-resistant, the network’s reliance on Ethereum’s infrastructure for data availability and bridging creates potential bottlenecks in security hardening.

Starknet Initiates Governance Vote on Potential Quantum-Resistant L1 Shift
Starknet has opened a seven-day community poll to determine if the network should research a transition from its current Ethereum Layer 2 status to an independent Layer 1 blockchain. The initiative, launched October 15, 2026, aims to address long-term security vulnerabilities posed by emerging quantum computing capabilities.

Should the community vote in favor, developers will begin drafting formal research and architectural designs for an independent chain. If the proposal is rejected, Starknet will continue its quantum-resistance upgrades within its current L2 framework. Regardless of the outcome, the project has confirmed that the STRK token will remain the network’s native asset and that existing Ethereum bridges will stay operational. No plans exist to issue new tokens or force user asset migration at this stage of the governance process.
