TIME Names von Holzhausen’s Plant-Based Plastic Among 2026’s Best Inventions

A plant-based alternative to petroleum-derived materials, Liquidplant® has secured a spot on TIME’s annual list of 300 innovations. Developed in Los Angeles, the material replaces conventional performance plastics like EVA and silicone, offering a sustainable, biodegradable solution that functions within existing manufacturing processes without sacrificing durability or tactile quality.

The material, engineered from sugars and seeds using patented green chemistry, represents a shift toward bio-circularity. By utilizing biofermentation—a process where microbes transform plant inputs into high-performance polymers—von Holzhausen aims to eliminate fossil fuels and toxic chemicals from global supply chains. Because the material is designed to be fully recyclable or naturally biodegradable, it leaves no microplastics behind, addressing a critical pain point in current material science.

To move from laboratory success to mass-market adoption, the company is currently constructing a new manufacturing facility in Georgia. This domestic expansion supports ongoing collaborations with major brands in the footwear, wearable technology, and healthcare sectors. By positioning the product as a drop-in solution for injection-molded components, the firm intends to prove that high-performance materials can be both non-toxic and environmentally responsible.
