US Lawmakers Press Meta Over Alleged Bias in Brazil Election
A group of 13 Democratic lawmakers, spearheaded by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Pramila Jayapal, has demanded that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg account for alleged algorithmic bias in Brazil’s presidential runoff. The legislators are calling for an immediate briefing regarding claims that the platform suppressed content favoring candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The congressional inquiry follows reports that Meta’s platforms may be disproportionately amplifying content associated with Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, while restricting the outreach of his opponent. The lawmakers emphasized that social media companies carry a fundamental responsibility to ensure equitable distribution and moderation of political content during democratic transitions.
Adding weight to these concerns, the corporate accountability group Ekō recently published findings indicating that Instagram’s algorithm pushed right-leaning content to new, neutral accounts. In response to the growing scrutiny, the lawmakers have requested a detailed breakdown of the 17 initiatives and human review systems Meta claims to have implemented in compliance with orders from Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court. They have set a November 4 deadline for written responses to their specific questions regarding platform neutrality.
This push for oversight comes as domestic concerns over digital influence intensify. Representative Jamie Raskin has separately demanded that Meta, Google, TikTok, and X provide transparency reports concerning their efforts to curb election misinformation ahead of the upcoming US midterm elections. For these legislators, the scrutiny of Meta’s role in the Brazilian contest serves as a broader warning regarding the unchecked power of social media giants to shape the outcomes of democratic processes both at home and abroad.
