Trenton Johnston sentenced for $13M cryptocurrency laundering scheme

A 20-year-old Canadian national has been sentenced in Miami after orchestrating a sophisticated cryptocurrency laundering operation that siphoned over $13 million from victims. Johnston, who bragged about his illicit gains on Discord, received time served on October 26 following his cooperation with federal investigators in ongoing criminal probes.

The sentencing follows a guilty plea to conspiracy to commit money laundering. Prosecutors credited Johnston for providing substantial assistance to authorities, which factored into the judge's decision. As part of his post-arrest cooperation, Johnston surrendered approximately $3.8 million in Bitcoin and Ether. Defense attorney Brooke C. Watson noted that her client expressed deep remorse for his role in the scheme.

The operation relied on social engineering, with Johnston and his associates impersonating support staff from Google and hardware wallet provider Trezor. By convincing victims their digital accounts were compromised, the scammers gained direct access to private wallets. In one instance, a California resident was defrauded of 185 BTC. Evidence presented in court included Discord logs where Johnston boasted to an accomplice about hitting the massive target. The stolen proceeds funded a lavish lifestyle, including a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, luxury jewelry, and private jet travel, often shared with co-defendant Brandon Michael Tardibone.
