The scale of these breaches has intensified significantly. Average losses per suspected North Korean-linked attack have ballooned to $185.65 million this year, a sharp increase from the $50.65 million recorded in 2021. Chainalysis data indicates that since 2021, these operations have accounted for $13.24 billion in total losses, representing 59% of all reported global crypto thefts during that period.

North Korean Hackers Linked to 89% of 2026 Crypto Theft Losses
North Korea-linked hackers have seized control of nearly 89% of all reported cryptocurrency hack losses in 2026, according to blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis. This surge in digital asset theft underscores a dramatic escalation in state-sponsored cyber operations, even as Pyongyang aggressively rejects international sanctions targeting its weapons and revenue programs.

Investigators have traced the recent $6.3 billion theft from Binance directly to the North Korean cybercrime group known as TraderTraitor. Blockchain analysis linked assets from this breach to a separate attack on the Bitget exchange in September, providing what researchers describe as the strongest evidence of a coordinated effort. TRM Labs, which also attributed the Binance breach to the same group, identified sophisticated preparations involving pre-signed authorizations and automated laundering patterns. Despite the mounting pressure from an 11-country coalition and the European Union, a North Korean foreign ministry spokesperson dismissed the sanctions as ineffective, asserting that such measures fail to influence the country's nuclear or cyber trajectory.
