Binance and US Federal Agencies Halt Billions in Stolen Crypto Assets

Within minutes of the October 29 breach that saw $6.3 billion siphoned from Binance, U.S. federal investigators and industry partners initiated a rapid response to intercept the funds. Changpeng Zhao praised the Secret Service and the FBI for their coordination in freezing a significant portion of the stolen assets.

The FBI has officially attributed the theft to the North Korean group TraderTraitor, noting that attackers moved the massive sum across 10 blockchain networks in under 20 minutes. While the Secret Service declined to specify the exact dollar amount secured, investigators confirmed that active efforts to trace and recover the remaining funds are ongoing. The operation involves a multi-agency coalition, including the IRS Criminal Investigation unit and the Department of Justice, working to track the assets as they are converted into Ethereum and laundered through decentralized finance protocols.

Binance has moved to stabilize its platform, pledging to cover user losses through the Secure Asset Fund for Users and internal company resources. Preliminary findings indicate the breach originated from a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop, which provided unauthorized access to an internal service container. Although the incident triggered a sharp market downturn with over $1.5 billion in liquidations, the exchange maintains that core wallet private keys remain secure. Federal authorities have released a list of associated Ethereum addresses and are urging service providers to block transactions linked to the North Korean hackers.
