HSBC’s RedCoin Gains 50,000 Users in First Week of Hong Kong Rollout

Fifty thousand users have activated HSBC’s new Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin, RedCoin, just over a week after its October 23 debut. The banking giant is leveraging its established PayMe application to drive adoption, aiming to eventually scale the digital asset to its millions of existing retail customers across the region.

HSBC Group CEO Georges Elhedery confirmed the adoption figures during Hong Kong FinTech Week, attributing the early momentum to the city’s stable regulatory environment. The stablecoin, which trades under the ticker RCHKD, currently operates on a private, permissioned blockchain utilizing Hyperledger Besu technology. Because the token is integrated directly into PayMe, users can initiate a wallet without the burden of opening new bank accounts or maintaining specific minimum balances.

Financial transparency remains a core component of the rollout. As of November 2, the bank reported HK$87.75 million in circulating RedCoin tokens against HK$88.75 million in cash reserves, providing a buffer of approximately HK$1 million. While the bank publishes daily circulation data, it does not expect to release its first independent reserve attestation until after the fourth quarter of 2026.

Beyond basic peer-to-peer transfers and merchant payments at over 100,000 locations, HSBC intends to broaden the asset's utility. Future plans include integrating RedCoin into the main HSBC HK Mobile Banking application and enabling subscriptions for tokenized investment products, such as money-market funds. This digital push coincides with the bank's broader infrastructure investments in Hong Kong, including the upcoming launch of an AI and Emerging Technology Institute slated for 2027 to focus on fraud detection and blockchain security.
