The system addresses a fundamental friction in digital finance: the difficulty of moving value between isolated blockchain environments. By employing a bridgeless architecture, Consensys allows banks to retain assets on their original ledgers, mitigating the security risks typically associated with third-party bridges. The technology supports four primary functions: securities settlement, wholesale currency payments, collateral transfers, and fund servicing, all executed through an interface integrated with existing bank applications.
David Cunningham, president of Consensys, emphasized that the platform is designed to help institutions connect with counterparties while maintaining strict privacy and control over their infrastructure. The software manages the entire lifecycle of a transaction, including delivery-versus-payment and payment-versus-payment arrangements, ensuring that transfers are confirmed across participating networks. While currently limited to Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible networks, the company intends to expand support to the Canton protocol and other standards such as the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol.
