The diplomatic fallout follows an October 31 FBI announcement identifying the North Korean hacking group TraderTraitor as the primary actor behind the October 29 breach. While Kim Yo Jong dismissed the findings as a grave political provocation, she noted that dialogue is not permanently off the table, provided the U.S. abandons its demands for denuclearization and terminates joint military exercises with South Korea.
Security firms including TRM Labs and Chainalysis have independently corroborated the FBI’s findings, tracing the massive theft across multiple blockchain networks. Binance, which has already replenished 95% of customer assets using emergency reserves, reports that collaborative efforts with financial institutions have successfully frozen approximately $3 billion of the stolen funds. Despite these recovery efforts, blockchain analysts at Elliptic estimate that over $3.2 billion remains in attacker-controlled wallets, complicating the path to full restitution.
