Coinbase affirms asset safety following $6.34B Binance security breach

Following the discovery of a $6.34 billion theft from Binance, Coinbase has moved to reassure its user base that its own systems remain entirely secure. The exchange confirmed that over 99% of its customer assets are held in offline cold storage, isolated from the vulnerabilities that compromised its competitor.

Coinbase affirms asset safety following $6.34B Binance security breach

The reassurance from Coinbase highlights a stark difference in security architecture after attackers bypassed Binance’s withdrawal infrastructure by compromising internal wallet-signing tools. Coinbase utilizes a distributed signing key system and secure multiparty computation, which prevents the assembly of full cryptographic keys in a single location. These protocols are designed to ensure that no single point of failure can lead to an unauthorized transfer of funds.

Beyond technical safeguards, the exchange maintains a 1:1 ratio for customer assets and explicitly prohibits lending or leveraging user holdings without direct authorization. While the company carries crime insurance to cover potential cybersecurity breaches, it notes that this coverage does not extend to individual account compromises resulting from stolen user credentials. Furthermore, U.S. customers should be aware that their cryptocurrency holdings are not covered by FDIC or SIPC protections, though specific dollar balances held at eligible financial institutions may qualify for standard deposit insurance.

In response to the Binance incident, South Korean regulators have tightened oversight, urging domestic exchanges to audit their withdrawal approvals and administrative privileges. Current South Korean mandates already require platforms to maintain at least 80% of assets in cold storage, a threshold that major local players like Upbit and Bithumb currently exceed.
