Polygon weighs hard fork to recover $6.5M in stolen tokens

A member of the Polygon Labs validator-support team has proposed a hard fork to reclaim 70.49 million POL stolen from Binance and Polymarket. By overriding current address restrictions, the move aims to return $6.5 million in assets to their original owners without altering the total supply of the cryptocurrency.

The proposal targets 23.86 million POL linked to the Polymarket incident and 46.63 million POL associated with a Binance breach. While Polygon’s block producers have already blacklisted five attacker-controlled addresses to prevent outflows, these measures offer no mechanism to return funds to their rightful owners. The suggested protocol change would execute a one-time transfer of these balances into verified recovery wallets belonging to the affected institutions.

Author Parvez03 characterizes the intervention as an extreme measure, explicitly warning against establishing a precedent for recurring fund recovery. Because the attackers retain control of their private keys, bypassing the current deadlock requires a fundamental change to the blockchain’s operating rules. The plan faces a formal review during the November 5 Polygon Protocol Governance Call. Should governance reach a consensus, developers estimate a two-week window for testing on the Amoy network and coordinating with node operators to prevent a chain split. Binance and Polymarket must provide formal verification of their recovery addresses before any code deployment occurs.
