Sanders targets $2,400 annual Social Security benefit increase
A $2,400 annual boost to Social Security benefits is among Bernie Sanders’ priorities when he takes control of the Senate Social Security Subcommittee in January. The Vermont independent said he would seek to raise the income cap on Social Security taxes, now $184,500, so higher earners contribute on more of their income.

Sanders said lifting the cap could fund higher monthly payments while extending Social Security’s solvency “for generations.” He argued that wealthy people should pay into the program at the same rate as working-class taxpayers.
Nancy Altman, executive director of Social Security Works, called the midterm result a win for the program. She said voters had sent a “resoundingly clear” message: “Hands off our earned benefits!”
Altman urged lawmakers to vote within the next two years on legislation that expands benefits without cuts and restores Social Security’s long-range balance by requiring the wealthiest Americans, including Elon Musk, to pay more. She also called on Democrats to investigate Musk and the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, alleging it had carried out the largest data theft in American history by taking Social Security data.
Altman said Democrats should reverse what she described as damage by Donald Trump and his allies to the Social Security Administration, arguing that Americans deserve the service they have paid for.
