The proposal, introduced by Sen. Chuck Grassley, includes a $1 billion allocation for an "East Wing modernization project." This funding is earmarked for the site where Donald Trump demolished the original structure last year to make way for his planned ballroom. The broader reconciliation package also designates $30 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, alongside billions more for border security and the Department of Homeland Security.
Democratic legislators have denounced the move, pointing to the disparity between funding a private vanity project and failing to support struggling families. Rep. Brendan Boyle labeled the bill a disaster, noting that it provides no relief for rising food and energy costs or healthcare protection. Rep. Sean Casten called the prioritization offensive, while Rep. Yassamin Ansari noted the irony of taxpayers funding a project once promised to be privately financed.
