Bitwise report highlights Solana’s heavy reliance on European validators

A new analysis from Bitwise reveals that 72.8% of all delegated SOL is managed by validators operating within Europe. This geographic concentration, centered largely in Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and London, highlights a significant disparity in how the Solana network processes transactions as developers push for faster slot times.

Bitwise report highlights Solana’s heavy reliance on European validators

The report, which utilized data from Allium, Solana RPC, and Marinade, places North American validators a distant second with 16.2% of the stake. Asia accounts for 10.6%, while South American operators hold only 0.4%. This clustering of infrastructure has created a performance gap following the network's transition to 250-millisecond slot times. At this increased speed, European validators achieved a 95.8% single-slot vote arrival rate, while Asian nodes struggled, hitting only 70.7%.

Despite these regional performance differences, Bitwise notes that nearly all votes still arrive within two slots, keeping overall network skip rates low. The firm observed that while the concentration of hardware in Europe raises questions about decentralization, it does not automatically subject the network to the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation. Because validator location is not synonymous with the jurisdiction of the token holders or the legal status of the service providers, the regulatory impact remains complex. As developers target a further reduction to 200-millisecond slots, the network continues to grapple with the tension between high-speed performance and the geographic distribution of its validator base.
