Developers can now install the Wavelength client to create wallets and execute bitcoin transactions without the overhead of managing a Lightning node or payment channels. The system utilizes the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to expose wallet functions as tools, allowing AI agents—such as those built with Claude Code, Cursor, or Gemini—to send and receive payments seamlessly. Payments are facilitated through L402, where an agent requests a resource, receives a Lightning invoice, and gains access upon payment.
Security remains a primary focus, with wallet creation and unlocking handled outside the agent’s reach to protect seed phrases. The October release introduces restricted, receive-only credentials that prevent agents from signing transactions or recovering funds. While the system is live, Lightning Labs has implemented an initial account ceiling of 300,000 satoshis and a 50,000-satoshi limit per individual transaction output. Users are charged a 0.25% service fee on all transfers, in addition to standard routing costs.
